Witch World

Step through the Siege Perilous — the standing stone that answers only the hunted, those with nowhere left to run — and the fugitive is delivered not into death but into another world entirely. This is Witch World: a land where power runs in the blood and the naming, where the grey-robed women of Estcarp hold their borders by the shaping of will, and where a man out of our own century can arrive with a smoking pistol and find that sorcery is the stranger weapon. Andre Norton opened the gate in 1963 and spent three decades widening it. The stories divide by geography as much as by saga. The Estcarp cycle follows the exile Simon Tregarth and his witch-born children against the machine-cold invaders called the Kolder; across the sea, the High Hallack cycle turns feudal and gothic — the dales and the Were-Riders, the crystal gryphon, Year of the Unicorn's bride-bargain with a shapeshifter. Later Norton threw the doors wide to other hands: the Tales of the Witch World anthologies and the collaborative Turning sequence drew writers such as P. M. Griffin, Mary H. Schaub and A. C. Crispin into her world, until the map held far more than one author could walk. What binds it is a particular texture — quests undertaken by outsiders and outcasts, magic that costs the wielder, a wondering tone pitched closer to legend than to swordplay. Threads recur more than plots resolve, and each cycle stands open on its own. There is no single decreed sequence, but Norton meant her first novel as the first door: begin with Witch World (1963), follow Simon into Estcarp, and let the later cycles find you from there.

Andre Norton's Witch World splits into two regional cycles that can be read independently: Estcarp, where the series begins, and its own long tail of co-authored sequels; and High Hallack, a separate land with its own cast, including the Gryphon trilogy. Start with Estcarp, since that's where the series - and its name - began.
