The Star League is a thousand years dead, and its heirs have spent the centuries since burning down what it left them. Across the Inner Sphere — the reach of stars humanity settled, and then very nearly lost — five Great Houses hold their thrones by the only currency that still buys loyalty: the BattleMech, a house-tall walking arsenal, and the MechWarrior neurohelmeted into its cockpit. This is BattleTech, a thirty-first century of feudal dynasties, hired regiments, and technology so precious that a single working factory is worth a world at war. Begun at FASA in the 1980s and carried on through Roc, Del Rey, and today Catalyst Game Labs, the fiction runs to hundreds of novels by many hands, organized by era. Michael A. Stackpole's Warrior trilogy and the Saga of the Gray Death Legion lay the bedrock of the Succession Wars around 3025; his Blood of Kerensky trilogy and Robert Thurston's Legend of the Jade Phoenix turn the lights on the Clans — the returning descendants of the Star League's exiled army, who fight by ritual and bid for the right to conquer. Twilight of the Clans answers that invasion; the later MechWarrior: Dark Age vaults generations onward. Blaine Lee Pardoe, Randall N. Bills, Kevin Killiany, and Jason Schmetzer keep the roster deep. What sets it apart is texture: heraldry and dropship logistics, the long grief over "lostech" no one can rebuild, honor codes weighed against cold battlefield attrition, engagements that read like after-action reports as much as adventure. Newcomers can move chronologically through Stackpole's Warrior trilogy, or go straight to the war everyone remembers with Blood of Kerensky — the Clan Invasion, and the sharpest door into the Inner Sphere.

The classic FASA/ROC novel line carries its own official book numbers, and this route follows them: the Gray Death Legion and Warrior trilogies, the Clan-invasion novels from Lethal Heritage on, the eight-book Twilight of the Clans counter-offensive, and the FedCom Civil War novels through Endgame. The MechWarrior-branded novels, the Dark Age line and the later Catalyst fiction are separate lines outside this route.
