Cthulhu Mythos

Something vast and indifferent stirs beneath the floor of the world, and the only mercy is that most minds cannot add up what little they glimpse of it. The Cthulhu Mythos is horror pitched at cosmic scale — a shared nightmare in which humanity is neither the center of creation nor its purpose, but a brief accident under stars that were old before the earth had cooled. Its furniture is by now half-familiar even to the uninitiated: the drowned city of R'lyeh and its dreaming priest; the forbidden Necronomicon; decaying New England towns where the old blood runs wrong; and the Great Old Ones, who do not so much hate us as fail to notice us at all. This is no single author's estate but a haunted commons, worked by many hands across a century. H. P. Lovecraft laid the cornerstones in the pulp pages of Weird Tales — "The Call of Cthulhu," "The Dunwich Horror," "The Shadow over Innsmouth," the Antarctic dread of At the Mountains of Madness — while his circle of correspondents (Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Frank Belknap Long, Robert Bloch) borrowed and returned one another's blasphemous gods and unspeakable books. After his death August Derleth named the whole edifice, ordered its pantheon, and kept it in print through Arkham House. Later hands extend it in their own registers: Brian Lumley marches occult investigators to war against the dark across the Titus Crow novels; Peter Rawlik and W. H. Pugmire write in a knowingly modern, densely allusive vein. A commons this size holds masterwork and pastiche shoulder to shoulder, and makes no apology for it. What sets the Mythos apart is its refusal to console — no order restored, no cosmos that cares. Enter through Lovecraft's own hand rather than any later system: begin with "The Call of Cthulhu," then "The Dunwich Horror" and "The Shadow over Innsmouth," and press on to At the Mountains of Madness once the mood has its hooks in you. There is no single sanctioned sequence; the tales were built to stand alone and read, loosely, in any order. But the Old Gentleman's stories are the door through which every other hand first entered.
